Flemish Red-Brown Ale Explained

One of our most interesting, oldest and complex breweries we have is Brewery Rodenbach. Rodenbach is the kind of brewery that leaves a lasting impression. Here passionate beer masters ensure the perfect flavour of the famous 'Flemish red-brown ale'. Using their own unique recipes they brew exceptional beer from mixed fermentation in 294 oak casks. The result being beers that are slightly different to what you expect. Refreshing and intense.

But just what is a 'Flemish red-brown ale', I hear you say and which one should I try first? Well, Flanders red ales are fermented with brewer’s yeast, then placed into one of 294 oak barrels (foeders) to age and mature. The mature beer is then blended with younger beer to adjust the taste for consistency and it is this that gives Rodenbach its complex, pleasant taste.

To begin your Rodenabch journey, we suggest that you start with Rodenbach FruitAge – a blend of aged ale, young ale and 7% red fruit. It has a sweet-sourness and fruity notes and is served in a cocktail style with ice, mint and lime. The perfect place to start your Rodenbach discovery journey. Once you’re comfortable, Rodenbach Classic is next. Made up of 3/4 young beer and 1/4 beer and matured for two years, this has a highly refreshing and appetising ale! Definitely, the next on the list!

From there you move on to the more complex of the Rodenbach range with Alexander, Vinatge and Grand Cru. We’ll tell you all about those another day!

Until then, Cheers to the unexpected!
